Hi there, Sooo... here I go taking on a challenge that is outside my comfort zone.... running a 10K marathon in Israel!!! The only thing that could make me do this is that I am raising money for an organization very close to my heart... SHALVA. As some of you may know, I grew up in a home with a sister who has severe Cerebral Palsy. Unless you experience living in a home with someone who has physical, mental and/or emotional challenges, it is unimaginable to anyone. In my home, just to get my sister to the breakfast table with no emotional struggles or difficulties was a challenge... and that was a good day. This gives you an idea of what the rest of the day looked like. My sister has always needed round-the-clock care. I wish my family had a place like Shalva - it would have changed all of our lives. Shalva provides transformative care to individuals with disabilities and their family members in the warmest and most loving environment from infancy to adulthood. Providing social and recreational activities, therapy programs, employment training, independent living, respite programs (all regardless of religion, ethnic background and financial capability). They help the individual with special needs AND their families. This would have been life-changing for my family. There is a saying that it takes a village to raise a child. I can tell you from firsthand experience that it takes an entire community to raise a child with any type of challenge. Shalva is this village.
